We call them treasures, latest inventions or marvels of humanity when the raw stuff is done away with and the sparkle is glinting in the sun. When the world is finally scrambling to catch a glimpse and capture it all on glamorous front pages of the glossy magazines, one shot after another. We all zoom in and want to be the first, or at least among the first ones to have access to the latest updates of what’s new and what’s gracing the global headlines. And then praises pour in as garland after garland is accorded to the ingenuity, the brilliance and the acumen that has gone into refining and redefining the frontiers of human genius. We are thrilled by the exceptional, and fascinated by the extraordinary.
What we are not so good at, however, is the patience to stick to a single focus, a single task, until the gifts we have been endowed with become the jewel we, along with the world will admire and desire. We are quick to label what looks like a lot of work as tedious or too troublesome to engage in. But it takes a lot of hard toil, pain, sweat and a number of times, premium tears for the raw gems God has placed within us to become the final product – the treasures we all long for. It is not exactly what we want to hear, but it is inevitably an integral part of the process. Ask the oyster. The pearl is an end product that starts off with pain, an unwanted and unwelcome irritation within it, say, from grains of sand or other irritants. However, through persistent and continuous layering, the oyster overcomes the initial ‘trouble’ by ending up with a product that the world will give anything to obtain.
We each have gems-in-the-raw within us. Some people stumble into them by chance. Others know from an early age that they have a knack and special ability in a particular field or space. How hard we are all working at shaping, refining, cultivating and honing the abilities we have within, will determine the ultimate benefit the world will get to enjoy.
And how do you do that, you ask? Nature and the world around you is full of clues. Do you see a problem that irritates you, one that you can’t stand? That right there could be your first clue. What gets your juices flowing and sizzling and popping? It may look so natural and obvious to you that it could be ignored. Follow your intuition as it leads the way and let the future, and the treasure-in-the-making unfold as you make each step. An infinite number of possibilities lie at the periphery of each move you make and there’s no telling what other gem you will find along the way that can be a blessing to the world. But only if you keep going and keep working to perfect what you discover. Humanity is hungry for solutions, and the raw treasures are already there, waiting for the work to get started. The world’s thirst for new knowledge and inventions can never be quenched, so let’s all do our part and populate its repository.
