I came across a most interesting video clip the other day. It showed a 3D image where the narrator started out by zooming in to the different angles of the drawing he was presenting for consideration. Whichever part of the diagram he chose to zoom into with his fingers, the details opened up into other aspects that were invisible initially. The further in that he zoomed into the same spot, the more other images within the original one began to appear, not as miniscule details, but as full drawings which simply became clearer. He then zoomed out and moved on to a different part of the larger image, and once again, began to zoom in. Each new aspect he unveiled revealed just how multi-layered the entire image was. I was fascinated. The layers that were falling away the deeper into the drawing he went, made it feel like it was simply an infinite piece of work.
And then it hit me. That is exactly what each one of us, as individuals, is. We are multi-layered and multi-faceted. Think with me through it. An artist will create piece after piece of breath-taking, even mind-bending paintings, and even after she has done ten thousand of them, her mind will still be teeming with ten thousand more. The kernel of an idea in the writer’s mind only serves as evidence that a forest of books is bubbling underneath, waiting to sprout through the pages and fill up numerous shelves that lay in wait. The budding thoughts over time become an avalanche of ideas that can no longer be contained. They must be freed and given wings to fly and perch on the minds of others, to pollinate their concepts and ideologies, only for the process to keep propagating ad infinitum. The melodies that course, initially unknown and unheard, within the musician, rise in songs that grab the minds and hearts of people for generations without end. The power of a tune works wonders: it draws tears, comforts the weary and the grieving, wrenches emotions from their complacency, and invariably compels motion and gyrations to match its tempo. Music even has the power to hydrate and bring to life a withering muse – it’s nothing short of a wonder.
And the beauty of it all is that everything we produce, comes literally with a life of their own. And a layered world of their own for that matter. Consider the fact that some songs that have been sung have caused revolutions, while others have literally become anthems, embraced and acknowledged for the ideals they espouse. Some books have become the holy grail of certain spheres of literature, for the spectacular and phenomenal ideas they carry, which have revolutionised humanity for ages. Every new creation, whether a song, a piece of art, a new invention, whatever it is, contains entire worlds within it. It excites me immensely, just the thought of it, that there is no telling the limitlessness that resides within me, only waiting for me to keep creating with no holds barred.
Let’s get started exploring the worlds within worlds in us, shall we?
